Gov. Palin's Accomplishments in Office

Old media dinosaurs have NOT asked Sarah Palin about her actual accomplishments

In considering Sarah Palin's fitness as a vice presidential nominee, it's absolutely crucial to distinguish between mere tenure in office and actual accomplishments while there. In their televised interviews with her, however, Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric have almost completely ignored Gov. Palin's actual record in office. So, too, have most of the old-media sources who've been writing about her. They'd far rather dig through a dumpster or watch videos of a guest pastor from Kenya speaking at a church Gov. Palin has sometimes attended than talk about Gov. Palin's day job as chief executive of the largest state in America.

(There's yet another important aspect to her candidacy that the mainstream media has ignored almost as resolutely, which is her courage and determination in campaigning as an underdog reformer, taking on deeply entrenched and ethically challenged members of her own party in Alaska. Arguably that's her most important accomplishment of all, given how much of a cesspool Washington has become. But let's set that aside for the moment.)

Gov. Palin is now finishing up her second year as Governor of Alaska. Even added to her years as a city councilman and mayor, or her service as chair and ethics officer of the Alaska Oil & Gas Conservation Commission, that is not a very long record. But length is only one dimension. How deep is her record?

The answer to that question is critically important. Joe Biden has been a senator, as Gov. Palin points out, since Gov. Palin was in grade school, so of course he has a long record. With that seniority has come committee chair positions, first on the Senate Judiciary Committee, then on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. But on closer examination, neither as a committee chairman nor a legislator has Slow Joe Biden particularly distinguished himself. His greatest legislative triumph has been in championing revisions to the bankruptcy code that dramatically changed the slope of the playing field to favor his home-state credit card companies in consumer bankruptcy proceedings — an accomplishment much disdained, in fact, by the Hard Left. So what, by contrast, has Gov. Sarah Palin done in her dramatically shorter tenure as a state chief executive?

If you only know three things that Sarah Palin has accomplished as Governor of Alaska, it should be these three:

Gov. Palin is a proven fiscal conservative who used her line-item veto to slash hundreds of millions of dollars in spending from the state budget. In considering this accomplishment, keep in mind that the Alaska Legislature is controlled by the GOP, meaning that the funding she cut had already been approved by legislators of her own party. Nevertheless, she made her vetoes stick. Consider, too, that because of the current high price of crude oil, Alaska is enjoying record budget surpluses. It's harder to practice restraint in times of plenty. And look at her entire record over time (more than as revealed by her position on a single bridge): Although Alaska has traditionally been more dependent than other states on federal funding (since the federal government owns such a large portion of the state's property and resources), even the often-critical Anchorage Daily News admits that Gov. Palin has "increasingly distanced herself from earmarking" since 2000, and that her having done so over the past year has been "the leading source of tension between Palin and the state's three-member congressional delegation." Actually exercising fiscal discipline in a time of plenty, at both state and federal levels and against the will of the members of her own party, is a better predictor for how she would actually govern on a national level than ten thousand campaign promises.

Gov. Palin kept her campaign promise to revamp the state's pre-existing severance tax on oil & gas production, replacing a structure negotiated behind closed doors by ethically challenged predecessors and the big energy companies with one negotiated in full public view — and then rebated part of the resulting surplus directly to tax-payers. Severance taxes are a kind of property tax charged on a one-time basis, at the time of production, on subsurface assets (like oil, gas & minerals) which can't be quantified and taxed through regular property taxes. There was widespread resentment and distrust over the version negotiated by Gov. Palin's predecessor with the three big energy companies who've traditionally ruled the roost in Alaska (ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, and BP). The new version negotiated and passed with Gov. Palin's support was thoroughly disinfected by the sunshine of public scrutiny. Although it's not a "windfall profits tax" — indeed, the base rate only went from 22.5% to 25% — it did permit the Alaskan people to share in a larger portion of the current high prices for oil by raising the additional, progressive portion of the tax from 0.25% to 0.40% on revenues between $32.50 and $90/bbl. Above that, however, the new law actually cut taxes by dropping the rate on revenues above $90/bbl to 0.1%. With the resulting budget surplus, after contributing to the state's fund for that future day when its oil & gas wealth is exhausted, she pressed for and got legislation to rebate a healthy chunk directly to tax-payers on a per capita basis, trusting them to spend the proceeds from this sale of the state's commonly-owned resources rather than trusting government to spend it for them.

Gov. Palin broke a multi-year stalemate over the financing and construction of a cross-state gas pipeline that will deliver cleaner, cheaper natural gas to Alaska's own population centers (Alaskans themselves pay some of the nation's highest energy prices), while also delivering gas to the energy-hungry Lower 48. To do this, she had to break the monopoly power of the big energy companies by opening the project to competitive international bidding. Not only has a development contract with a Canadian company now been signed on better terms than had previously been discussed, but the former monopolists — finally spurred by competition — are cranking up their own plan that would not require any taxpayer investment. How precisely this will shake out remains to be seen, but Gov. Palin's vigorous action — calling special sessions of the state legislature and injecting herself directly and vigorously into the process — has ended the deadlock in ways that seem certain to benefit consumers. By this accomplishment, Gov. Palin has done more to advance the cause of American energy independence than any other politician — of any party, and at any level of state or federal government — in this century. But the national media have generally ignored this accomplishment.

It's no accident that Gov. Palin remains immensely popular in her home state, notwithstanding the widespread derision of the national elites. Her actual accomplishments in office are vastly disproportionate to her time spent in office, but her constituents value the results she's gotten.

And isn't that what we want? Should we want politicians who have been in office a long time without getting anything done? Should we want the kind of "wisdom" shown by Slow Joe Biden, who opposed the nominations of both Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito, and who proposed that we subdivide Iraq into three parts (each to be dominated by a different foreign interest)? Should we prefer someone like Barack Obama in the top job as POTUS, even though he has no longer tenure than Gov. Palin and conspicuously fewer actual accomplishments?

Will Gwen Ifill ask any meaningful question of either Gov. Palin or Sen. Biden about their actual accomplishments in office tomorrow? Will she ask Biden about the bankruptcy law changes? Will she acknowledge Gov. Palin as a demonstrated fiscal conservative and crusader for energy independence?

I'm not holding my breath. But if the media won't help educate Americans about Gov. Palin's accomplishments in office, then each of us should!

Gosh! I'm so glad I heard about this blog, saw you guys on CNN. As a born again Christian (as all Christians, of course, are)I too want to fellowship with persons of like minds and hearts. The problem is, I've been a Christian a long, long time. Long enough to know that Christ would never bash or prejudge people. That Christ loves us as Christians no matter what our color, or our middle names. That when He told us to love our enemies, He didn't want us to kill them. That He, as we should be, is tolerant, loving, and kind. On another note, as a thinking Christian mom, I certainly do want someone who is not, Susie hockey mom" or "Joe six pack" in the White House. I want someone who is not a regular guy, or gal, in there. I don't want someone who graduated third from the bottom of his class at Annapolis ( and crashed five jets--it isn't patriotic to crash jets) in a class of more than 450, as President. I am a Christian mom. I have Christian values. My Lord has taught me many things. One of them, "Judge not, lest ye be judged." guides me daily. Tolerance is my motto, grace, my watchword.
Ladies, your tongues are a powerful weapon. Think. What would Jesus really do? Would he put a woman who drags her children all over the country, and keeps them out LATE at night, a woman who is vicious with her tongue and bashes others, a woman who belongs to a party whose interest is far from caring for the least of these, your brethern, in a leadership position? Ladies, you are wrong. A true Christian is humble, unjudging, and has a servants heart. To the least of these, your breathern.

The problem with Sarah Palin is that she is the vice-presiential nominee for John McCain. John McCain has shown little if any prudent judgement. But think for a moment, objectively if you can, about his decision to pick Sarah Palin. Let's imagine though that he is the principle of your child's elememtary school choosing a teacher for your child. He sees a candidate who is extremely popular. He teaching style is unique. She has a way of reaching students unlike any other. She is wildly popular at her current post. He has only met her one time, in an informal setting, not an interview. If she came to your school she could greatly affect the number of students, thus increasing the operating budget.

But when he does a background check he finds there is a question of her misusing her authority as a teacher against a student. Someone she has responsibility over. This allegation is so compelling that it has moved the people of her current school, who love her dearly, to launch an investigation. She is supportive and openly agrees to fully cooperate.

The new school year is about to begin. The investigation is not due to be completed before he has to make his decision. There are other qualified candidates who do not have the question of misusing authority. What would you hope John McCain, your child's principle, decide? Are you willing to gamble you child's safety with a teacher who is not fully cleared?

And even if the investigation clears her of any wrongdoing, you only escaped a bullet. What will be the result next time, he makes a gamble with your child's safety. Odds are a person who makes such reckless decisions will one day put your child's safety at risk.

Your group loves the Lord Jesus Christ. So do I. John McCain, who describes himself as a "maverick” is really throwing caution to the wind in times of great challenge. It is exactly the opposite of how you live your lives and exercise your faith. We have deep faith based on a strong moral code that we live by, not only in times of great exhilaration and prosperity but also in times of great trial or tribulation as well. Sometimes it leads us in places not of our own choosing. But we choose to hold on to them because we know in the end our lives are in the hands of the One who does not throw caution to the wind, the One who looks at not just the here and now. And yes, sometimes we are mavericks, but not for the sake of being one and certainly not as a reaction to circumstances but because we as compelled by the love of Him who sustains us. We are not tossed about in the storm. We are firm in our convictions and steady in our faith in all things (decisions).

I suggest to you that if John McCain held these same principles, he would have chosen someone else. He would have wanted to wait until the investigation was completed before committing our future safety on a gamble.

Sarah Palin is a rising star within the Republican Party. I am afraid that her decision to accept John McCain's risky offer may dim her light. Her time was not now, not with John McCain at the top of the ticket. If John McCain loses, Sarah loses her chance to be one of our nations great leaders. If John McCain wins, the nation loses as I believe his erratic, risky decision-making is a ticking time bomb.

I am open to hearing your comments about this issue as well.

I too wonder abut our media, I too am a Sarah supporter. I donated for the McCain this year is my first donation.
Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah

I positively would never, absolutely never, absolutely never vote for OBAMA. I can't believe that anyone else would - he can't make a decision. I watch news 24-7 and I believe in McCain.

The media has never given Palin a chance, the media is so extremely biased, I don't know why we put up with it. We all need to turn off those stations all of them all the local stations beginning with Katie Couric, Charles Gibson. Shame on Katie for not supporting a woman. Shame on Katie Couric and Charles Gipson for doing a GOTCHA interview. Shame on Katie Couric and Charles Gibson for make fools of themselves. So what if they asked tuff questions it still wasn't fair, first they edited out in the final interview any smart answers that Sarah answered. Do THEY CALL THIS FAIRNESS. This shows both Katie and Charles are treating the American public like we are stupid, all the media is NOT reporting truth -- what has happened to America. Republicans love America, respect America and there is a reason why every election that the media has to TRY to defend their patriotism.
What about Acorn -- do you understand that issue and the criminal implications behind it. It is a felony to be registered more than once in any state!!! Yet Acorn has turned in paperwork for registering people 15 times or dozens of times.

What about Ayers, he is a known bomber -- he bombed the Pentagon and some other places -- he and his wife, and his wife ended up going to prison for it. He is a known Socialist educator and Chavez praises him. Ayers, has said he is not sorry for bombing the Pentagon. Who would want their children educated by far leftest groups. Many of us don't understand the issues, I include myself in that. And we don't investigate when something is said that we might have forgotten - shame on us for not looking it up when we have the internet at our fingertips.

ACORN offices were raided in Nevada yesterday for voter fraud, but by the time the investigation is done the ELECTION WILL BE OVER.

We American's take our rights and privileges for granet because others use to look out for us. Others like the media, now the only one looking out for us is Bill O'Reilly!!!!!

We all need to investigate Ayers, because the media is NOT telling us the full story. If you want the full story. Listen to Rush Limbaugh, I didn't understand it until I heard it straight from Rush.

Never before in elections have we heard both sides saying the words LIE, lie, lie. People who don't even know who aren't even aware of the true issues.

All of us need to contact the Department of Justice and MAKE SURE that something is done about ACORN -- and make something be done NOW before the election is over. I hope each and everyone of you will contact the Department of Justice by telephone and complain and DEMAND ACORN BE STOPPED NOW and DEMAND THAT ALL OF THE VOTER FRAUD REGISTRATIONS BE THROWN OUT AND NOT USED AT ALL. They like to get homeless and unknowledgeable people to re-register not telling them it is a felony. These people have to sign and they will eventually end up in prison but they don't understand it. It's mind bogling that anyone would do this, but they pay them.

OBAMA Election Campaign paid ACORN $700,000 or $800,000. Some thing is wrong here. WE THE PEOPLE MUST SPEAK UP AND DEMAND THAT IT BE STOPPED AND NOT USED IN ANY ELECTION ESPECIALLY THE SWING STATES. The last election they suspected voter fraud from ACORN as well, yet how much do we in the United States truly know about this and why hasn't it been in the news. The news won't let us decide for ourselves!

Sarah Palin is completely qualified to become UNITED STATES VICE PRESIDENT. She was a Mayor, she was a Governor of our largest state. Has she perhaps made a few mistakes in her zealous to do a great job and to be honored and perhaps to even be giddy about being nominated. Perhaps. Still the Democrats ignore her qualifications. Shows the underhanded ness of the Dems in this girls opinion.

Sarah, Sarah, Sarah, Sarah, Sarah

Saturday Night Live and Tammy Fay, has expensive writers writing jokes and they are pretty funny too. I'll bet Palin has a sense of humor about it all!!!!! But even the commedy doesn't match the unprofessionalism of Katie Couric and Charles Gib son.

So typical, I've said for many years now that WOMEN show no comrodery like men do.

CNN is naming THE MOST WANTED CULPRETS OF THE COLLASP of the market -- BUT MCCAIN HAS ALREADY PROMISED TO NAME NAMES AND MAKE THE FAMOUS. MCCAIN IS SO PROFESSIONAL THAT HE DOESN'T SEEM TO WANT TO TEAR DOWN THE DEMOCRATS THE WAY DEMS HAVE ALWAYS TORN AWAY AT THE REST OF US.

I URGE YOU AMERICAN'S TO GET THE FACTS, DON'T TAKE THE COMMEDY AND THE INEXPERIENCED MOVIE STARS UNEDUCATED COMMENTS SERIOUSLY. WE ALL KNOW THAT MOVIE STARS WORK 18 HOUR DAYS -- IF WHAT THEY TELL US IS TRUE SO HOW CAN THEY EVEN BARELY FOLLOW ELECTIONS.

DID YOU KNOW NBC edited extremely the Sarah Palin Interview and that you can get a complete transcript. If they will still make it available. They try to get it lost in the shuffle when you go to their web site. How honest is that.

News media has reported that BARACK OBAMA accepted close to 200,000 in kick backs -- have you heard that report. Ask CNN or Fox news or any of them about it. No one will deny it.

I for one am going to keep posting here and

MAY I REQUEST THAT THEOWNER OF THIS SITE SET-UP A POLL WHERE WE CAN VOTE FOR WHO WE WOULD VOTE FOR IN THE ELECTION SINCE NO ONE BELIEVES WOMEN SUPPORT SARAH PALIN. MAKE SURE EVERYONE CAN ONLY VOTE ONCE OR ONCE A WEEK UNTIL THE ELECTION BECAUSE MANY OF US DON'T KNOW WHY THE MEDIA REPORTS THAT WOMEN AREN'T SUPPORTING SARAH PALIN -- HERE IS ANOTHER ONE THAT DOES.

What about Hillary, I'd be
p_ _ _ _ _ (mad) if Barack would NOT have nominated me for Vice President if I were Hillary -- they could have taken this election away!!! But mark my words that was the very first POOR decision that OBAMA has made and I've seen many more since then. He can't MAKE A DECISION his tenure of voting has PROVED THAT -- voting "PRESENT" -- no wonder he could nominate Hillary -- she would have walked all over him and she still would and so can every other NATION IN THE WORLD THAT HE IS WILLING TO SIT DOWN WITH.
